Volunteering in Reforestation Project in Eastern Indonesia


Deforestation in many places in Takalar, South Sulawesi, eastern Indonesia, has been taking place for decades. Trees are cutted for domestic fire wood, brick producing and supply to sugar industry which uses wood for heating process. Our reforestation project is to benefit local farmers with wood supply and to secure water in the future. Forest gardening, agroforestry and silvopasture models are now being initiated for the farmers to duplicate.

Opportunity for volunteers are made available to get involved and immersed in eco community based project to support the farmers in many aspect of reforestation and village improvement. Trees planting, advicing, helping in farming, animal husbandary etc. Volunteers may also help fishing and sea weed processing.
Minimum recommended stay is two months, the first month will be in Makassar, the second month will be on the forestation location. Stay may be extended up to six months.

BEFORE DEPARTURE
Before your departure we will supply you with information about the project, city of Makassar, project location, provide you with sponsor letter for you to apply for social visit visa. We will inform you how you will transfer your registration fee and monthly contribution.

MONTH-01
We will welcoming you at the airport upon arrival and take you to the student guest house where you will stay during your stay in city. After one day of complete rest, we will start with city orientation to show you how you move within the city. How to use public transport, where to shop, interesting places to visit, etc We will assist you in reporting to the immigration and police office. The city orientation will be three days at the maximum.
We will provide you with basic conversation of bahasa Indonesia training so that you will be able to carry communication with local farmers. Some guidance on community characteristic, how to communicate etc. will also be discussed.
You need to spend about $. 4.- to $. 5.- per day by eating out. You can prepare your breakfast at the guest house.
We will arrange meetings with local people with you so that you will know many people in Makassar. It can be by taking you to family gathering, wedding parties or arranging English Conversation Meetings.

MONTH-02
The second months will again a new adventure since your stay will be in the village where the project location is. You will be accommodated in one of the local villager house which is prepared as a home stay. You will stay in a different family situation. Your daily activities will be planting trees, but not only that. You will also oversee how the trees grow in the project sites as well as in the farmer garden. You will also have the opportunity to help the family where you stay in with their own gardening. There many interesting places you can visit during your free time. The project location is very near to the beach where there are beautiful views particularly during the sun set. Local farmers are farming sea weeds which is interesting to know how they grow them and harvest them. There is an eco-lodge of environment training centre where you can visit sometimes. Food twice a day will be provided at your home stay.

MONTH-3
If you decided to stay more than two months, the first halve of the third month is an opportunity for you to take a leave. You will be able to visit other islands and places in Indonesia, such as Bali, Borobudur, Bunaken, Jakarta etc. After the leave, you can again stay two weeks at the student dormitory in Makassar before you return to the village.

MONTH-4 to MONTH-6
At the fourth month you will spend your time in the village and do the volunteering work again. You may create variety in your work to support the project and the village improvement. You again will have one week leave at the end of the month to visit other places.

Eco Break Volunteering in Makassar and Tree Planting in Reforestation Project

This is an Eco Community Base Tourism where you plant trees on farmer lands which will own and take care of the trees further. You will help local farmer in setting up forest farming, agro forestry and silvopasture. Your presence on the farm area will be a great motivation for the farmers.
The reforestation project was initiated to secure water and to provide wood from the thinning and cleaning of the trees. Water is very scarce during the dry season. Lastly, the reforestation initiative is to contribute to the preservation of our environment.

DAY-01

Upon arriving in Makassar you will be welcomed by our guide and transferred directly to beach cottage in Makassar to have a break after a long travel. At the cottage you will enjoy beach view and the sound of wave. If you will arrive before sun down, which depends on your flight, you will view beautiful sunset before you enjoy dinner.

DAY-02 to Day 06 ( In the City of Makassar )

Four days will be spent in Makassar to get to know experience different kind of city. The first day will be visit of several objects like Losari Beach View, Fort Rotterdam with museum, Mandala Tower, to view the whole city, the large Mosque Almarkaz Al Islami, urban area etc. The second day will be going around by small public transport, becak and Pete2 to experience the authentic way of live. The other days will be helping or presentation on Solar Energy and Mechanical Workshop/Engineering in our skill training workshop.
Breakfast and dinner will be prepared at the cottage and lunch will be out side. On the day 07, we will travel to the reforestation project in Pandala and be accommodated either in Eco Lodge in Puntondo or in local villager house for experience.

DAY-07 to DAY-11

Every day after breakfast at the eco lodge in Puntondo, we will be transfered to the reforestation location in Pandala. Various activities awaiting us there. Planting Bitti trees with the farmers on the farmers lands or on LPTM pilot project land, visit farmers lands to observate the trees which were planted before, visit the farmers house for cultural communication etc. Meeting with groups of farmers to discuss about forest gardening, agro forestry, silvopastures and other possible topics on alternative energy, carbon emission, village improvement, etc. This is a real immersion in local community to see what ever we can help. Lunch box will be provided on field. Before going back to the eco lodge before sundown, we could visit places of interest such as beaches, sea weeds farmers, historical places, providing we will have enough time.

DAY-12

After breakfast in Puntondo we will leave for Bira Beach in Bulukumba. During the travel of about halve a day, we will see beautiful landscape along the way through the regency of Jeneponto, Bantaeng and Bulukumba. In Tanaberu, we will visit the wooden boat building traditional industry where the Bitti wood is applied as boat building materials. It is fascinating to see how they build the wooden ship with very minimum equipment. There after we will visit Kajang village and meet Kajang people which use only black shirt and refuse to use industrial product at their village. We have to use black costums provided, in order to enter their village. They are earth conservation believer. We will be at Bira cottage before evening where we will stay one night on the beautiful beach area with dilicious frest fish dinner.

DAY-13

Departure back to Makassar with first visit Ara coastal village. Ara is the origin of the wooden boat builder of Phinisi, a beautiful coastal village where beach directly adjacent to hills. Lunch will be taken in Bantaeng or in Takalar. A while stop to enjoy cooked corn in Takalar. We will arrive in Tanjung Bayang beach lodge before evening. A visit in souvenir shop can be arrange if needed.

DAY-14


Departure to the airport after breakfast with a possible sovonier shop visit depands on the departure time of the fligh back home.

One Day Excursions To Plan trees

Where to go in Makassar?


Tree Planting in Takalar, is an exiting experience. Support our Reforestation Project and contribute to the global warming mitigation. It is a Community based Project to secure fresh water for the local community and wood from the thinning of branches. Trees will be planted on our project location or on farmers lands who will own the trees.


One day excursion, we will meet you at your hotel on 08.00 to start a traveling along coastal area southward of Makassar. A sightseeing stop at coastal village in Barombong will give you a colorful experience with different impressions. Through out the travelling to the planting location, you will view many different things which typically Indonesian villages. Local wood houses, historical buildings, fishing boats parks, fish market, Tala’ trees, etc. Tala’ trees are palm trees from which they make brown sugar of even traditional liquor.

In Pandala, Takalar you will still see houses of bamboos before we plant Bitti trees. Bitti wood is the raw material in building the traditional sail boat Phinisi. After the tree planting we will visit a villager house for a short cultural communication before we proceed to Puntondo eco lodge for lunch. On the way back, we will go through Punaga beach village with stop for a while to see how local fishermen handle sea weeds, and a stop before the City of Takalar to enjoy boiled corn.

We will arrive at hotel around 17.00 to 18.00 a clock in the afternoon.

Transportation: a convenient mini-buss for a maximum of four travelers.

We will have lunch in a typical local sea food restaurant before departure to the reforestation location in Pandala. You will be accommodated in an Eco Lodge in Puntonto some kilometers from the project location. It is a premise of environment training center facility where you will enjoy quiet evening during the night. No television and radios, you will listen the sound of wind and sea wave.

DAY-03 to DAY-11

Every day after breakfast at the eco lodge in Puntondo, we will be transfered to the reforestation location in Pandala. Various activities awaiting us there.
